An honest comparison

Build it yourself, bring in a freelancer, or work with us.

Most of the teams we work with tried an AI builder first, and plenty of them were right to. Here is where each path shines, where each one gets hard, and how to tell which one fits your project. Including the cases where the answer is not us.

First, some honesty

The AI tools are genuinely good. That is not the question.

Modern AI app builders are the fastest route ever invented from idea to working demo. We use AI heavily in our own builds, and we will never tell you those tools are bad. The question is different: once the software carries revenue, customer data, or your reputation, who is accountable for it? That is the line that separates these three paths, and it is the honest way to choose between them.

Side by side

Seven questions, three honest answers each.

Build it yourself with AI tools

Fastest path to a working demo

Upfront cost
Tool subscriptions plus your own time, typically well under $4k. The cheapest way to get something real on a screen.
Speed to a working demo
The fastest path here, full stop. A clickable demo can exist before a freelancer or an agency has replied to your email.
Speed to production
This is where the curve bends. Auth, payments, data isolation, and edge cases are exactly the work a demo does not force you to do.
Security accountability
Yours alone. Veracode found 45% of AI-generated code contains OWASP Top-10 vulnerabilities, and no tool reviews its own output for you.
Who fixes it at 2am
You do. The tools are genuinely good at building. None of them carries a pager.
Code ownership
Yours, but often living inside the tool's platform. Check the export story before the project starts to matter.
When it is the right choice
Validating an idea, internal tools, budgets under $4k, or learning to build. Genuinely the right call more often than agencies admit.

Hire a freelancer

Flexible, and person-dependent

Upfront cost
Hourly or per milestone. The quote is a starting point, and the total depends on how well the scope holds up.
Speed to a working demo
Days to weeks, depending on availability and how well you brief them.
Speed to production
Depends entirely on the individual. Some are excellent. You find out during the project.
Security accountability
Usually out of scope unless you ask, and you have to know what to ask for.
Who fixes it at 2am
Whoever answers. Most freelance engagements end at handoff, so ongoing support is a new negotiation.
Code ownership
Usually yours. Get it in the contract, in writing, before work starts.
When it is the right choice
A small, well-defined task where you can vet the person yourself and manage the work directly.

Work with LOJI

Fixed price, accountable, supported

Upfront cost
Fixed price, scoped before you spend a dollar. Engagements start at $4k, and most full builds land near $40k. The number we quote is the number you pay.
Speed to a working demo
Slower than DIY, and we will not pretend otherwise. Our Estimate and Validate phases come before code, because a demo is not the goal.
Speed to production
Production is the definition of done. The Build phase ends when the software runs safely for real users, not when it looks finished.
Security accountability
In scope by default. Security review is part of how we build, not a line item you can forget to buy, and we put our name on the result.
Who fixes it at 2am
We do. Support is the fourth of our four phases, planned from the start, not an upsell after launch.
Code ownership
Yours from day one. Your repo, your infrastructure, your accounts. We work in it, we do not hold it.
When it is the right choice
When the software has to keep working after launch, and someone other than you needs to be accountable when it does not.
The part most agencies skip

When building it yourself is the right answer.

We would rather tell you this now than after you have paid us. If any of these describes your project, start with an AI builder and come back if the ground shifts under it.

You are still validating

You do not know yet whether anyone wants this. A demo you built in a weekend answers that question faster and cheaper than any agency can. Build it, show people, learn.

It is an internal throwaway tool

A script for your own team, a one-off dashboard, a tool with three users who all sit near you. If it breaks, someone walks over. Paying for production hardening would be waste.

Your budget is under $4k

Our smallest engagement is $4k. Below that number, an AI builder plus your own time is honestly the better spend, and we will say exactly that on a call.

You want to learn

Building it yourself is the best education in what your product actually is. Founders who arrive with a prototype they built themselves are some of our favorite people to work with.

And if the DIY build works and then outgrows itself, that is a good problem. Bringing us a working prototype is a strong starting point, not an embarrassing one. Taking AI-built prototypes to production is one of the things we do most.

What you are actually paying for

Not smarter engineers. Accountable ones.

The tools write good code, and so do plenty of freelancers. What we sell is different: one fixed price agreed before work starts, security treated as our responsibility instead of your homework, and a Texas-based team that still answers after launch. Four phases (Estimate, Validate, Build, Support) and our name on the result.

Accountability

One number, quoted before we start, and the number we quote is the number you pay. If we misjudge the scope, that is our problem, not your invoice.

Security

Reviewed as part of every build, not sold as an add-on. Access control, data isolation, input validation: the unglamorous work that keeps you out of the incident report.

Someone on the pager

Support is a phase, not a maybe. When something breaks, you reach a team that already knows the codebase, because we built it.

Still not sure which path?

Tell us about the project. We will give you an honest read, even if the answer is DIY.

Send the form and we reply within a day with the right next step, and a fixed price if we are it. Or book a call and talk it through live.
